PRESS NEWS: Further expansion of the electric fleet at Quehenberger Logistics

Three new electric trucks went into operation at Quehenberger Logistics in July. The company worked on a funding project with its customer, dm drogerie markt, which was approved at the beginning of 2024. "As a forward-thinking logistics company, we are delighted to be able to drive this sustainability initiative forward together with our long-standing customer, dm drogerie markt," confirms Paul Weissenberger, Project Manager at Quehenberger Logistics.

E-mobility as a key issue in logistics

Quehenberger Logistics has been focusing on e-mobility since 2018. As a pioneer in the industry, the company works closely with its suppliers to optimize the performance and practicality of electric commercial vehicles. "We see great potential in electric mobility, especially for city logistics," confirms Christian Fürstaller, CEO and co-owner of Quehenberger. The three new vehicles, which have been part of the fleet since July of this year, will also be used for city logistics. The advantages of emission-free deliveries and noise reduction are particularly compelling. "Traffic noise is perceived as especially disruptive in the mornings and evenings. Besides the elimination of exhaust fumes, this is the decisive advantage of electric trucks, whose noise emissions are around half those of conventional commercial vehicles," explains Paul Weissenberger. As can be seen from the vehicles' joint branding, they are in operation for the customer dm drogerie markt and ensure largely emission-free deliveries to the approximately 100 dm stores in Vienna and the surrounding area.

"Electric drives primarily make sense for short distances, and the city of Vienna is particularly well-suited for this. Our inner-city transport logistics will be CO2-neutral and emission-free," says Stefan Heiglauer, Managing Director at dm drogerie markt.

Further expansion phases of the project with dm are planned

The joint project with dm aims to significantly reduce emissions. Therefore, by 2025, no diesel trucks will be used to deliver to a dm store in Vienna from the Vienna transshipment center. Simultaneously, the fuel used for deliveries from the Enns distribution center to all transshipment points will be switched from diesel to hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO). Quehenberger Logistics has already secured several million liters of this environmentally friendly HVO fuel and uses it in its own fleet for daily operations.

"The use of HVO in our vehicles results in a significant reduction in CO2 emissions and a reduction in particulate matter emissions. The major advantage is that this biogenic fuel can be used directly as a diesel replacement in existing vehicles without any modifications," explains Quehenberger COO Klaus Hrazdira. "The amount of biofuel consumed is listed in Quehenberger's annual sustainability report. Customers will be able to access the resulting CO2 savings within the system in the future," emphasizes Klaus Hrazdira.

For 2025, the two companies have set themselves ambitious goals, including doubling their electric vehicle fleet and further expanding the charging infrastructure at their Quehenberg locations. Both companies see it as their responsibility to implement sustainable logistics concepts, thereby reducing their environmental impact and their ecological footprint.
